Graphic comic book science fiction take on Charles Dickens’s A Chrismas Carol which is very funny and horrible at the same time. A group of Scottish settlers, the McCrattchett family (clearly modelled on Dickens’s Bob Cratchett and his family in the original story) have arrived in Mega City One to make their dreams come true. They immediately lose their homes in the Necropolis Wars, and end up living in a harsh refugee camp on the edge of a radioactive wasteland on the edge of the city. Any radioactive mutants creeping in from the wasteland to the city through the ruined walls created by the war are supposed to be shot. They are starving in the cold winter blizzards and beg for any food they can get. They ask a passing fellow Scot, Be Scroow for alms, but like Ebenezer Scrooge, he couldn’t careless about anyone else. That is until the ghosts of his own mother and Father visit him one night and beat him up viscously. Fearing another such thrashing could come every night; Eb Scroow decides to do something charitable. He finds a vulture-turkey roaming in the border between the wasteland and the city and chases after it, but the Judges, including Dredd see his action as hostile and shoot him. Scroow crawls in his death throws to the McCratchett house with the remains of the bird .to wish them a merry Christmas. They have one, by roasting and eating Eb Scroow instead of the remains of the vulture-turkey. A silly idea, and well told. Dredd and 2000 AD are always at their best doing such parodies of well-known stories and this is a great one to see just before Yuletide. It’s a fitting addition to the series. www.titanbooks.com
