BOOK REVIEW – PAT MILLS –
INVASION! 1977 2000 AD.
Pat Mills has presented some excellent comic book work over the years, but Invasion! Is one of the most two dimensional, jingoistic comics ever produced.
In 1999, Birmingham is nuked and Britain is invaded and conquered by the Volgan Empire, Nazis in all but name, who simply lord it up on our natural resources and kill civilians for fun.
One man, a lorry driver, Bill Savage, armed only with a shotgun, makes a stand in vengeance for the Volgans wiping out his family. Reluctantly drawn into the Resistance movement, his dogged determinism, insane passion for revenge and ingenuity soon make him the leader, as he takes on the Volgans time and time again, luring them into trap after trap, and wiping out their forces.
Bill’s heroism and genius seem to rise from making everyone else seem stupid and cowardly by comparison. The enemy hare devoid of personality and we get to know little of Bill’s allies. Only to the close, as Bill is assigned to escort the remaining Royal family to neutral Canada, as the Volgans unwittingly draw the Americans into their war does the story end, with Bill vowing to lead the counter-invasion liberation force. Predictable and tedious, this is one of the worst comics and graphic novels going. Well drawn, but formulaic and relentless in presenting the same ideas over and over again.
