FILM REVIEW – THE SIMPSONS MOVIE

It was always a matter of time before the long running Simpsons cartoon hit the big screens, and they manage it very well.

There are lots of in jokes about stretching short TV cartoons to feature length movies, even at the beginning when the Simpsons go to the cinema to watch the Itchy * Scratchy movie, based on a cartoon enjoyed by the family in the series.

The main story is rather episodic – Homer gets a pet pig and uses an old grain silo for its waste, and dumps the silo in the local lake right after the town managed to clean the lake out thanks to an environment-clean up programme supported by Lisa Simpson and her latest boyfriend.

American business tycoons decide to isolate Springfield by sealing the town in a giant dome, trapping everyone within, and the town-folk go mad. They try to lynch the Simpsons when they learn that it is their fault, but the Simpson’s escape thanks to Maggie the baby finding a tunnel heading out of the dome, and they flee to Alaska, where they seem initially happy, but when protests about the dome lead to plans to nuke Springfield the Simpsons (Homer reluctantly) decide to go home and save the town.

A fun film, with most characters getting good cameos, from an exceptional range of voice-artists, with Tom Hanks & Green Day playing themselves.

There was controversy over a full frontal nude scene for the pre-teen Bart Simpson, though it’s just a clever naughty joke that helped the film to attract more publicity.

The gags continue right to the close of the end credits too – an excellent screen adaptation that got mixed critical and public reaction.
