ID CARD STORY – WOULD YOU LIKE
FRIES WITH THAT?
“Could I have a cheeseburger and… Max, is that you? Christ how the mighty are fallen.”
“Ray. How are you?”
“I’m fine, but you’re obviously not. I thought you were at Uni. What the Hell is you doing at Burgeroffs? “
“Uni went pear shaped on me. I was heading for my second year out of three exams when an ID check went wrong.”
“Went wrong?”
“Yeah, went wrong bit time. The card reader told my tutors that I’d falsified my application records when I had signed up for the course. I hadn’t falsified anything. It was a mistake, and I told them it was. They believed me but they had to suspend me while I got it sorted out. That was the rules. They had no choice. I took my case up at ID-HQ in Manchester, and had to pay £1,000 to get the record put right. That ate up my entire student loan. I got back on the course, but I had to drop out again almost right away through having no money left.”
“Quite a rough deal you had there. Sorry to hear about it.”
“Still, you seem to have done OK for yourself, with your snazzy suit and tie. What are you doing for a living these days?”
“Me? I’m a full time plain clothed ID Card Inspector.”
“Please tell me you’re joking.”
“No. Straight up. In fact, I’m going to have to see your card right now.”
“OK… Hope you don’t report me for anything bad… Us being old mates and all.”
“Well, there is the fact that you just spent ten minutes chatting with me instead of moving on to sort out other customers. I will have to record that one.”
“Are you crazy? You could get me sacked if my boss reads that.”
“Oh, I’ll be reading his card too. He should have pulled you up for it long before I just did…. Card please…”
But we’re friends…”
“Your card please …NOW!”
