GOING THROUGH THE TIME AND
MOTIONS.

The worker, Patrick Mitchell, is diligent, and persevering, but easily distracted and flustered. He clearly has some aversion to authority. His time sheets claim that he can pack 2000 toilet rolls per hour, which he palletises and shrink-wraps within that time slot. This is the amount of work expected of him by his employers at Fluffy Flushy.
However, when I came to the firm to check whether such timings are recording accurately or not, Mr. Mitchell proved able to only pack, palletise and wrap 1,500 to I, 750 packets of toilet roll.
I challenged the worker on the discrepancy between actual production speed and what he has been claiming to be able to do during my observations. Mr. Mitchell claimed that my timing methods interfered with his pace, and slowed him down considerably. He pointed out that I was marking my timings by stopping him at hourly intervals for an ID Check in order to record his production rate each hour on the hour. Mr. Mitchell declared that it could take five to fifteen minutes to stop the production conveyer belts supplying his workload, have his card read, and for me to record my figures on his behalf. He claims that his low rate of productivity is directly due to my statistical methodology. Such a claim is nonsense. My interference with Mr. Mitchell’s work is negligible. I am merely an observer and in fact an independent consultant hired by the firm to conduct this survey on its staff.
The truth is that Mr. Mitchell is a much slower worker than he believes himself to be, and that he may be exaggerating his productivity levels in recording his completed tasks on his time sheets. . He is not alone. Many other workers at Fluffy Flushy are equally slipshod about their duties. I would recommend that the company docks their productivity bonuses and considers making examples of some staff, like Mr. Mitchell through appropriate disciplinary procedures.
