MY
PHOTO DIARY #6 SUMMER 2010
It’s
been a very busy late Summer with several photo shoots and burlesque related
events happening in close succession, so my editing and photo taking has gone
into overdrive. I now have over 8,300 photos, and making disc space becomes a
real struggle for me, particularly with portable storage units like CD-writers
and discs not working on my computer at present.
The
Xcite Books competition was never judged and trying to find out what is
happening with that gains no replies, so very disappointed about that one.
I’ve
undertaken many walks, some quite lengthy, including visits to Marsden in
Yorkshire, a walk from Oldham to Delph, and walks to, and round Uppermill,
Stalybridge, Dunham Massey, and many more besides, with lots of photos being
taken on route.
My
pub signs collection is growing, and I was able to get more photos for it from
working in Sale, Altrincham, and surrounding areas. Still many more to collect
though.
My
real successes came with modelling shoots, notably those through Faint
Fascinations, and the new (to me) modelling group, Burlesque Biker Babes.
At
a picnic thrown for the models and photographers in Platt Fields, with lots of
games and props, we had one model in a bunny girl outfit, and others in gas
masks. I even got the bunny girl and others into a large hutch for several
startling shots.
A
Faint Fascinations shoot took place on a derelict building site in Trafford,
near to Manchester United’s football ground, and the Manchester ship Canal.
This had a Punk V High Fashion theme, so the urban decay worked well as a
backdrop. We later went down the Canal banks taking more photos there. It
was a hot, sticky day and many models brought children along, which meant we
had to be very careful around the water.
The
very next day we had a ‘Black Metal Gangster’ shoot, based on a European Gothic
rock band of that name, who’s face paint reminded me very much of Kiss. We shot
this in Castlefield, and attracted quite a public audience, as we were not only
close to the Museum Of Science & Industry, but in the central arena, and
finishing line for the Manchester Skyride, a celebration of cycling for
all. Many members of the public watched our shoot and took photos of our
models themselves. Everyone had great fun. Things got increasingly
surreal, as the stage show area was partly mapped out as a massive beach,
complete with sand, deck chairs and a fake promenade. We naturally
exploited this to the full, attracting much bemusement from the official event
security teams.
We
then moved off to a secluded canal side area, where I took shots of one brave
model, Jemma Muise, looking as if she was about to be executed by drowning with
her feet in concrete (actually a plastic bucket packed with newspapers and
topped with porridge oats. Another model, Diamond Sparkle, the bunny girl
mentioned above, posed lifting heavy beer barrels over her head.
Steampunk
was our next exciting theme, shot around Ancoats, and including the first model
invited through myself, poet, Jackie Hagan, and we even created a photo-story
take on the Jack The Ripper story WHY THEY NEVER CAUGHT JACK http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=254051&id=731547393&l=25d80796ae
With Stuart Alexander Rees superb in the leading role.
Again
this directly preceded another photo shoot, with a visit to a burlesque show in
between, the Burlesque Biker Babes is a group run by a dear friend from the
performance scene, Willow Blue. She’d hired The Hellfire Club for the shoot and
invited many burlesque performers, models, photographers, bikers, and friends,
including several of the Faint Fascinations team, along for the shoot.
With
a live snake, large nylon spider, bikes, trikes, and the Gothic looking club
itself, this gave me some of the raunchiest of my shoots, and there were some
gentlemen among the models who were equally fun to photograph. Massive thanks
to all the models involved in these events. I have also now added a list of the
modelling shoots I have been involved in, with relevant links. http://arthurchappell.me.uk/my.photo.shoots.with.models.htm
The
last event I was to photograph in August 2010 was the social side of an English
Civil War battle at Basing House, Basingstoke, and Hampshire, which again,
proved to be a wonderful opportunity.
With
a Trash The Dress event on for Early September, autumn looks promising too.
