ARTHUR CHAPPELL WALK REVIEW GREENFIELD TO ASHTON > WALK – GREENFIELD TO ASHTON Another lengthy urban walk, following on from other Saddleworth walks, this time taking in Greenfield, Roaches, Mossley, Copster Hill, Waterloo and Ashton itself, though the last town is covered in related walks. Greenfield is best reached by heading for Uppermill and doubling back on yourself to take a fork in the road towards the Greenfield train station. There are several pubs here, The Railway, Kingfisher and King William 4th among them. Several reservoirs are centred on the area, including the Dovestones. HARTSHEAD PIKE Moving through the town towards Wellyhole Road, where it rained enough to wish I’d brought wellies, I moved across to Roaches, Quick Edge, and round the edges of Mossley. And onto Stamford Road / Mossley Road, with spectacular views of Hartshead Pike nearby. There is evidence of druid activity on the pike hill, which was probably used as a beacon fires hill in the 17th century. The folly tower was built in 1863 to commemorate the wedding of Prince Albert Edward (later to become King Edward 7th) to Princess Alexandra. The road eventually leads to Waterloo, which has a barracks once belonging to the Manchester Regiment who served in the Anglo-French Wars, so not surprisingly several pubs have Waterloo related names, including The Wellington and Heroes Of Waterloo. Passing Tameside General hospital, the route brings you into Ashton itself, where there is an excellent museum to the Manchester regiment it. © Copyright.
